Chalkboard Tray
Hello again!
It is a terribly rainy day here, hopefully not the same where you are. Anyway I was at the thrift store a few weeks ago and found a tray that I thought would be a wonderful addition to our house. Only problem with it was it was terribly ugly (nothing I can't fix though).
I had been seeing a post on Pinterest for a while (probably even liked it a few times) of a tray that had chalkboard paint on it and I thought it couldn't be that hard. The pin was from Wit & Whistle and I thought it was a great idea for a platter. No more guessing about what is on the platter anymore!
I really wish I had taken a picture of the tray before I started painting but oh well. It had some dark wood and it was just overall really ugly.
The first thing I did was sand down some of the rough spots on the tray then I wiped it out with a wet paper towel and went outside to spray paint the whole thing in Krylon's Ivory from Wal-Mart for around $3.67.
I taped up the two metal handles with some painters tape because I really liked them, but I painted the entire thing Ivory. Originally I was going to leave the sides and top Ivory as well, but I'm not exactly the most skilled painter so I wound up getting some of the black chalkboard paint up on the sides and when I tried to keep it off the top it got there too so I wound up with just the outside sides and the top too. The sides of the tray are still the ivory color and overall I am really pleased with how it turned out.
One thing that you need to do before you write on the tray is take a piece of chalk and rub it all over to prep the paint, then you are ready to write all over.
I used Craft Smart Chalkboard Paint in black from Michael's for about a $1 for each bottle, and I write on it with Bistro Chalk Markers that I found at Hobby Lobby for around $12 (I think).
